For the past several years, we’ve hosted our documentation on ReadtheDocs, which has been solid and worked well, but we wanted an upgrade. Enter GitBook.

amazee.io’s CTO and Founder, Michael Schmid, and our Product Lead, Toby Bellwood recently participated in a discussion about Kubernetes and Drupal on Episode 257 of the podcast, Talking Drupal. Chatting with the hosts Stephen Cross, John Picozzi and Nic Laflin the conversation covered a lot of the history and intricacies of running Drupal on Kubernetes.

amazee.io’s CTO and Founder, Michael Schmid, had the chance to discuss the origins of Lagoon and amazee.io on Episode 232 of the podcast, DrupalEasy. Chatting with Michael Anello, they delved into what it means to run a completely open-source platform, and how it fits into a best-practice focused Drupal development workflow.

Before joining amazee.io, I managed a Fortune 500 website with global traffic from B2B customers from household name brands. We were running a Drupal 7 site, which suffered inexplicable downtimes and latency.

As the interest in containerization continues to grow, so does the number of options to facilitate it. Kubernetes has not only become the industry standard to maintain, start, and deploy containers, but a broad open-source ecosystem has also been built around it. It can be challenging to navigate the growing set of possibilities. If your organization is considering a more hands-on, DIY approach to migrating to Kubernetes, we’ve laid out some key considerations for you.

When we started building Lagoon four years ago, best practices for containerized hosting were still being developed, and building everything based on OpenShift was an obvious choice, as it provided an enterprise-class solution. As the cloud-native landscape has grown, native Kubernetes has not only become the industry standard to maintain, start, and deploy containers, but a broad open-source ecosystem has been built around it, and now provides a lot of the tools and features that were previously only available in Openshift. 

Until now, Lagoon users have been reliant on a suite of local dev tools, including our own homespun open source tool, Pygmy. As amazee.io’s primary focus is developing and supporting the Lagoon hosting platform, maintaining and enhancing Pygmy has often been less of a priority. Because of this, the local development process has always had room for improvement.

Working with contribution-focused clients allows us to contribute work we do to help the community at large. A few months back, we got the chance to contribute on an issue to GitLab, helping any Lagoon users who use it for their repos. Our RBAC system allows users and companies to assign roles with different permissions via our API.

In October 2018, amazee.io released the first iteration of a User Interface for Lagoon — this provides a far more convenient option for consuming information about your sites running on Lagoon and performing a limited set of tasks on them.
